A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rhoda had been driving the Route 9 for nine hours when the stag stepped out of the creosote and stopped dead in the middle of the tarmac. She braked so hard the back door of the van rattled open, and then she simply sat there with the engine ticking and the heat coming off the road in sheets, waiting for it to move.

It did not move. Against the last of the light it was nothing but shape: the flat black of a cut-paper animal, head lifted, antlers branching out like the roots of a dead tree. No colour in it at all, no grey where the fur should catch the sun. She had seen deer before, dun-coloured and skittish, bolting at the first headlight. This one looked as if someone had pinned it to the sky and forgotten to fill it in.

She thought of her grandfather, who used to cut silhouettes for the dances at the chapel hall, folding black card into fans and snipping out horses and dogs faster than anyone could sketch them. He had told her a silhouette was the only honest picture, because it left out everything you were tempted to lie about. Rhoda leaned out of the window. "Go on," she said. The stag turned its head, unhurried, and walked into the dark beyond the verge as if the road had never been his problem. She waited until the horizon was only a line again, then drove on, the outline still floating on the windscreen every time she blinked.
