Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind with her hair tied up, wearing a white vest top, and a cat rests on her left shoulder. The image is black and white with a dark background, and the tattoo is the focal point near the centre of the frame.

Nobody in Tessaly Wells had seen the bull move since the spring rains, and the carrier who hauled water up the Kessen road was paid to make it move. Ada Vance had been sent out with the salt wagon and a tin of sardines for the animal, which was black-horned and stood in the middle of the road as if it had been poured there. The cat, Morrow, came with her because Morrow went everywhere she did, riding the left shoulder like a stole with her claws hooked through the cloth of Ada's coat.

The bull watched them with the patience of something that had outlasted three governors. Ada tried the sardines. She tried shouting the name of the valley, then the name of the man who had sold her the wagon. Morrow only yawned and stretched one paw toward the dust, the way she did when she wanted to be set down somewhere. It was the cat who first noticed the pale notch on the bull's flank, a crescent cut into the hide, and that the animal kept turning its head to keep that side toward the sun.
Ada sat on the warm running board and thought about her grandmother's stories, how bulls could not be shoved, only coaxed. So she stopped trying. She ate a sardine herself, let the engine idle, and began to sing badly the song about the salt pans. Somewhere in the second verse the bull lowered its head, let out a long breath of steam into the cold morning, and walked off the road into the scrub as if it had only been waiting to be asked.
Morrow leapt from the shoulder to the dashboard and sat facing the empty road with an air of ownership. "You can thank me later," Ada said, and for once the cat did not argue. The wagon rolled on towards the ridge, and the crescent-marked bull stood above the scrub, watching them go.
