Small tree tattoo on upper back
Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo
A small tree with a thin trunk and spreading branches is tattooed at the base of the neck, with reddish-brown and green leaves. The linework is delicate and the leaves are filled with light shading, and a tiny green bird sits to the upper right of the canopy. The tattoo is centred against plain skin and a white top, with the subject photographed from behind.

Dear Tom,

The canvas came down on Tuesday, and Mr Vell has sold the last of the ponies to a farm near Ledbury, so it is only the lorries and us now. You asked whether the old ash by the field gate survived the wet. It did, and it has put out leaves the colour of rust, which Dolores says is a bad omen for the season, though she says that about most things since her hip went. I have been sitting under it with my tea most afternoons because nobody else wants the job of keeping the rigging dry.
There is a bird that has taken to the top branches. Small, green as a bottle, nothing like the swallows we used to see over the big top in Cardiff. It sits there while I work on the trapeze bar, shifting its feet and looking down at me as if I were the act. I told Dolores it was a sign that we should stay another year. She laughed and said birds have no interest in circuses, which is fair, because they have no interest in anything we do.
The thing is, I found the ledger from 1971 in the wagon, and the tree is in the photograph of the opening night. It was no bigger than a broom then. Someone, probably your father, had tied a rope to it for the swing the children loved, and the bark has grown over the knot so the rope is part of the trunk now. I have decided I will not cut the rope free. When we go, the tree stays where it is, with its bird and its little knot, and that will have to do.
Write soon, and tell Mum the tea tin is not for the lorry.
Love, Ada
