Small triangle tattoo on the neck
Geometric · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a person seen from behind with their hair in a braided updo, against a blurred dark tree line. A small, solid, outlined triangle sits on the back of the neck just below the hairline, slightly off centre. The image is black and white, so the tattoo appears as dark grey ink, and the composition keeps the tattoo as the sharp focal point against soft background detail.

The Ordnance man had left the brass plate on the wall for eleven years, and the triangle it recorded had never once been wrong. Mrs Ruth Adair, who kept the county's bench-mark books in a room above a chemist's on Kettle Street, knew this because she checked it herself every spring with a theodolite borrowed from the grammar school. Three points, three bearings, one small truth that everyone who needed to know where the hill ended and the valley began could agree upon.

In March a letter arrived from a farmer named Dunmore, who claimed the middle point had shifted by the width of a fingernail. Ruth doubted him. Nobody moves a stone set in Yorkshire grit. Still, she packed her sextant and a flask and took the bus out past the sheep pens, and by four o'clock she was kneeling on the cold ridge with her palm flat against the stone, feeling for the cut arrow that should point due north.
It pointed exactly north. She told Dunmore so over tea in his kitchen, and he nodded and asked whether she wanted to see the other mark, the one by the stream. He had found it moved in the night. She went. The stone had not moved. Someone had drawn a second triangle beside it in wet chalk, equal on every side, a little lopsided at the apex, as if by a hand that had only just learned to hold a rule.
Ruth measured the chalk shape with her thumb and forefinger, and it was true to within a hair, which unsettled her more than any moved stone would have. Then she sat on the damp grass, took out her pencil, and ruled a line from its apex to the true north arrow, finishing the sum. Walking back down the ridge she did not look behind her, though she heard the sheep go quiet all at once, as if something had passed them that they had agreed to let through.
