Forearm · Colour · Photo

The photograph shows an open hand and forearm with a small turtle tattoo on the inner arm, seen from the side with the head and legs drawn in. The turtle has shaded, textured shell detail in greens and browns with some darker outlining. A warm colour tint covers the left edge of the frame, and a braided bracelet and a dark band sit on the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Maddox kept the dance hall at the bottom of the valley, where the millrace ran slow and brown past the back door. Every Saturday the fiddlers came up from the town and played until the floorboards gave off heat. Every Saturday the young men asked the miller's daughter, Hester, to dance, and she said no, because she was waiting on a man who had gone over the hill to find work and had not come back.

On the night the rain came sideways, a turtle walked in through the open door. It was no bigger than a saucer, its shell greened with weed and cut with the pale scratches of a long road. Nobody liked to step on it, so the dancers went round it in a ring, and the fiddler, a thin man called Ned Orr, stopped playing to watch it cross the floor. It went straight to Hester's chair and stopped there with its neck out, the way a dog waits to be let into a kitchen.

Hester bent down and saw a copper ring tied round one of its legs with twine. She knew the ring. She had given it to Tom Lacey the morning he left, and had told him to bring back something slow enough to carry its own home. He had always laughed at that. Ned started playing again, low and careful, and Hester lifted the turtle into her lap and kept time with her foot.

Tom came through the door at the last tune, soaked and grey at the temples, and stood by the wall with his hat in his hands. The turtle, Maddox always said, was the only one of them who had not hurried.
