The fishing village of Sarn had three wells and one heron, and the heron was the only thing the old men agreed about. It stood on one leg in the shallows below the salt pans every morning before the boats went out, grey and patient, and it never once took a fish from the nets. Nobody had seen it hunt. Yet the nets came up heavy, and the eels in the baskets were fat.

Ione, who mended the nets for her uncle, decided she would find out why. She waited on the sand one dawn with a cup of sour wine and watched the bird wade out. It turned its head towards her, and then it spoke in the voice of her grandmother, who had been dead nine winters. "The tide owes me a debt," it said, "and I collect it in your uncle's favour. Do not let him count the fish."
She went home and told him nothing, but she began to count. Each morning the catch grew, and each morning the heron stood a little closer to the shore, until one day its shadow lay across her feet. Her uncle grew rich, bought a second boat, and forgot to leave the first catch on the rocks as his father had. The heron did not come that morning.
The sea took the new boat on the first storm of autumn. Ione walked the tideline for three days and found only a single black feather on the wet sand. She picked it up, rolled it between finger and thumb until it dried, and walked back to the village with her hands empty and her uncle's nets over her shoulder, which was the only thing the sea had left her to carry.
