Vertical script tattoo on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, showing a vertical line of small black script lettering on her upper back. The letterforms are thin and even, set in a serif-style lettering with clean edges. The image is mostly tan, white and blonde tones, with the ink as the only dark element on the skin.

The cook's knife has gone blunt again and the bosun won't let me near the grinder until the swell drops, so I am doing the onions with the wrong blade and crying twice as hard as I need to. You would laugh. Mrs Keogh's recipe book is still in the locker under the sink, the one with the water-stained cover, and I have read its margins so often I could recite them to the gulls.
We took on fuel at Dún Laoghaire yesterday and a porter from the chandlery left a crate of Kerry butter on the step with a note tucked under the string. It said only: keep the galley warm for the one who comes back. No name. I have decided it was Father, because he always wrote as if each word cost him a penny.
Here is what I need you to do. Go up to the attic and open the blue tin under Mammy's coats. There should be a manifest folded in four, the old one from the Holyhead run, with her handwriting on the back. Read me the line that starts with ar scáth and tell me if I have it right. I have copied it out so many times on the backs of tickets that the pencil has worn grooves in the paper.
Don't come down to the quay when the boat docks. Just send word on the wireless. I'll be in the galley by six, stirring something that smells like home.
Love, Nessa
