Palm tree on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with blonde hair, wearing denim dungarees and layered necklaces, raises one arm to show a small palm tree tattoo on the upper arm. The palm has a solid black silhouette of fronds on a thin, slightly curved trunk, with no shading. The ink is black on a plain, light background, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame.

It sprouted in March, a pale hook pushing up through the compost on the kitchen windowsill above the sink. Within the year it had bent itself toward the glass the way everything in that house bent toward the one window that faced south, and the trunk curved like a question. Neighbours came to look. Old Ivor from the chandlery said it would never survive a Bristol winter, and she told him it had survived worse than him.
When the telegram came in November, she did not move the plant. She sat beside it with the wireless off and watched the shadow of the fronds lie across the tiles, black and flat and perfectly still, the way the shadow of a ship lies on still water. In the morning she cut a single frond and pressed it between the pages of the ship's almanac.
Years later a stranger knocked, a young man with a sailor's roll in his walk, and asked whether the palm on the sill was for sale. She said no. She said it was for the sun, and it was only borrowing the house.
