Small wavy line tattoo on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a thin, horizontal wavy line with a few sharp peaks sits on the side of the torso, just below the breast. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the tattoo appears to be healed. The image is a mirror selfie with the head and face cropped out, showing a white camisole top, a raised arm and a soft, warmly lit background.

Sit nearer, the fire won't mind. You see that ink line in the book? That's the sea talking, though it speaks in a language only keepers learn. Old Amos Trewin kept the log at Gull Scarrow for thirty-one years. Every morning before the bell he lifted the swell chart off the drum in the back room and drew its wave fair into the ledger, with a steel nib he would not let anyone else touch.

The winter the Sybil Vane went onto the Hammers, the pen ran wild. Peak after sharp peak, quick and jagged, like a man running uphill with no breath left. Amos stood with one hand flat on the table and watched it climb. Then he shouted for his daughter Rosa to fetch the flare and the lamp oil. He knew the water was coming before it came, and the ship was still a mile off in the dark, with no lantern anywhere to warn her.

They pulled four men from the surf that night. The fifth they never found, and Amos never forgave the chart for being right. He wrote that wave again and again in the book afterwards, small and even, the way a child practises a letter it is afraid of.

Rosa read the book when he died. The last page holds one wave drawn in the margin with no figures beside it. Beneath it, in his neat hand, he had written only the hour and the word watch. She kept the lamp trimmed every night after that, and so, if you ask the rocks, does the sea.
