Fine line motif down the upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with her hair in a ponytail is photographed from behind, showing a small tattoo running vertically along the centre of her upper back. The design is a slim, looping black line motif that tapers up towards the neck, drawn with thin, even linework and no shading. The skin is tanned and the background is a tiled bathroom wall with a textured shower curtain, with a white bikini top visible at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The wire came down again at Carrow Junction on Tuesday, two hundred yards past the water tower, and I was the one sent up the pole to find out why. Half the line had sagged into the hedge like a dropped skipping rope. Mr Pryce from the depot stood below with his hands in his pockets and told me the sending was dead from Halton to the coast, so the boats in the harbour were waiting on word about the tide.
I'll tell you what I found, because you asked last time and I put you off. A bird had nested in the cross-arm, and a loop of copper had worked loose and wrapped itself round the insulator like thread round a spool. I spent an hour untangling it, one turn at a time, and when I finally pulled it straight it ran up the pole in a long slim line, coiled twice at the top where it had been bound. It looked nothing like a wire anymore. It looked like something somebody had drawn with a steady hand and no hurry.
The message got through at a quarter past four. The stationmaster's boy ran it down to the quay on his bicycle, and I heard later the tide had been read in time and nobody on the Maud went out too far.
I keep thinking about that coil. Some things only hold together if you go slowly round them. I'm posting this with the evening mail, so you'll have it before Sunday. Tell Mother the wire is fixed and I am too.
Love, Tom
