Small wing tattoo behind the ear

Other · Mixed · Photo

A small wing with detailed feather layers is tattooed behind the ear, with the outline in black and the feathers shaded in grey. Two or three small green letters sit on the lower part of the wing. The ear and a few hair strands are visible in the frame, and the image is a close, well-lit crop of the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are sweeping rain off Platform Four when the night sleeper groans to a halt short of the water column, three carriages past where it ought to be. Nobody is meant to be on the down line after midnight, least of all a relief porter with a split boot and a broom. Yet the third coach has its window down, and a woman is leaning out, one hand flat on the frame as if the train might pull away without her.

She asks whether this is Penrith. It isn't, you tell her, it's Carrow Junction, and the driver has overshot by a mile of wet sleepers. She laughs, a short sound, and says her husband used to wait on this platform in 1962 with a thermos and a torch, and that the conductors always dropped her at the wrong end. Then she passes down a folded card wing, pencilled in grey with three green letters on its lower tip, and asks you to take it to the signal box, where Tomasz still keeps the late shift.

Tomasz reads it under the lamp and says nothing for a long time. Then he tells you the letters stand for Carlisle Sleeper Pullman, the name painted on that very coach before it was cut up for scrap, and that the old drawing office used to sketch wings like this on the backs of spare timetables. He hands the card back. 'She isn't asking about the train,' he says. 'She only wants someone to say it stopped.'

You walk back down the platform with the card buttoned into your coat. The sleeper is pulling away now, slow as a tide, and the carriage window is empty, the frame still damp where her hand was. You pin the wing to your lapel. The green letters catch the lamplight all the way to the footbridge, and you keep them there until the next train comes in.
