Angel wings with halo on the neck

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a pair of angel wings with a thin halo floating above them sits on the side of the neck, below and behind the ear. The feathers are drawn with dark outlines and grey shading that gives the wings some depth, and a fine line runs up from the top of the design. The image is in natural colour with the tattoo in black and grey, and the frame is tightly cropped to the ear, neck and part of a hand.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keeper's boy had been climbing the stair since the gale took the boats, and by the time he reached the lamp room his hands were bleeding from the rail. Below him the sea was throwing itself at the rocks of Scarrow Head, and somewhere out in the murk a fishing smack was trying to find the light that had gone dark.

His grandmother had told him the old story. A bird had once flew into the lamp and been burned, and the angel who came to carry its soul was so moved that she gave her own wings to light the way. Nobody in Scarrow believed it, except the women who took it in turns to sit with the lantern when the oil ran low.

The boy wiped the glass with his sleeve. Then he saw the thread of light the lamp threw out over the water, a fine line rising from the rock, and above the breakers the pale ring it made where the spray caught it. He understood that the lamp was not the light. The light was the watch, kept by whoever stayed awake. He trimmed the wick, pumped the oil, and turned the great lens by hand until his shoulders screamed.

At dawn the smack came in past the reef, low in the water, with three men aboard and a torn sail. The boy did not look for angels. He looked at the sea, counted the men as they stepped onto the stones, and went down to put the kettle on.
