Small word tattoo on an index finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows an open palm with the fingers spread, taken from the palm side. A small word, oops, is tattooed on the top section of the index finger in a serif typewriter-style font, and it appears upside down from the viewer's angle. The ink is dark and fine, set against a pale skin tone, with a blurred wooden floor and furniture in the background.

Mr Pell had the Imperial jammed in his teeth again when the bell over the door went, so I was the only one free to answer it. A man came in with a portable Olympia under one arm, wrapped in a bath towel like a sleeping cat. He set it on the counter and asked if I could fix the typebar that kept hitting the wrong letters. I told him the machine was fine. The machine was not the problem. Every fourth word he typed came out with an extra letter, and the extra letter was always an o.

I found the fault in a minute: someone had bent the spring back to make the keys quieter, and it had never quite sprung true again. I straightened it, rolled a scrap of carbon paper in, and typed a single word to check. It came out crisp and black. He watched me the way people watch a conjuror. Then he asked me to type it again, but facing him, so he could read it from his side of the counter. I turned the platen round and struck the keys, and the word sat there upside down, small and prim, like a dropped cup that had decided not to break.
He paid in coins and left without his towel. I found it later with a stack of invoices folded inside, and I kept it in the back in case he returned. Three weeks on he came back for it, and he had a letter with him, typed on the back of a seed catalogue. It began Dear Margaret and ended with a line about the weather, and in the margin, very small, someone had struck the same word again and again until the paper was nearly through. Mr Pell asked who had done that. I said nobody knew, and handed him the towel.
