Mr Aldous Penhale had marked every pledge in his Hull shop with the same small glyph for thirty-one years, a looped stroke like a ram's horn drawn by a man in a hurry. He had cut it into the brass stamp himself one winter, when the old one wore flat. Nobody asked what it meant. Customers only wanted to know whether the watch would come back to them.

The Thursday the grey ring arrived, Penhale nearly refused it. It was a plain band, worn thin, and the customer who slid it across the counter kept her gloves on and her eyes on the door. She said she would redeem it by Saturday. He asked what she would give for it. She said nothing she could spare, and he found that he believed her.

He stamped it anyway, pressing the glyph inside the band where no one would see, and wrote the ticket in his small square hand. Saturday came and went. The ticket stayed in its drawer. In the spring a letter arrived with a Leeds postmark, two lines long, asking only whether the mark on the ring still meant what it always had.

Penhale took the stamp from its hook and turned it over in the lamplight. He wrote back that it meant the thing was held, not sold, and that the shop would keep it for as long as it was asked. Then he locked the drawer and, for once, did not try the handle a second time.
