Snail and sun geometric forearm tattoo

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A snail outline sits at the centre of the design, drawn in thin black lines with dotted and angular geometric lines radiating around it. Behind it a solid red circle is set against large orange triangular shapes, with teal and green blocks at the edges of the arm. The colour ink dominates the composition, and the black linework stays crisp against the flat fills.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You find the snail at half past two, on the wet pavement outside the bakery on Lantern Row, dragging its shell across a slick of spilt sugar. Nobody else is awake except the lamplighter's cat, and the streetlights hum the way they do before they decide to go out.

The snail has a route. You work it out by following the silver trail it leaves, which zigzags between drain grates and the bottoms of shop doors, always angling uphill towards the old observatory. Someone once scratched a red circle into the observatory wall, and the snail seems to know it is there, as if it has been drawn towards a sun it has never seen come up.

At the observatory gate you crouch and set down the paper bag of crusts you were carrying for the pigeons. The snail stops. Above the roofline the sky has gone the colour of a peeled orange, earlier than any almanac allows. Its shell throws a long triangle of shadow across your shoes, and for a moment every dotted line you ever ruled in a school notebook seems to run from its spiral to the rim of the sun.

You don't pick it up. You wait with it while the sun clears the chimneys and the snail finally reaches the bottom step, and the city wakes around you like a shop sign being switched on, one window at a time.
