Red bloom and stem on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A single red flower bloom, shaded with soft pink and deep red tones, sits on the outer forearm at the end of a long black stem. The stem is drawn in fine, delicate linework and tapers into a dark, shaded leaf that fades toward the wrist. The background is softly out of focus, with a floral patterned top and a warm brown surface behind the arm.

Dear Tom,

The field behind Mrs Pryce's barn has gone red again, and I've been out there every morning since the rain, trying to catch the poppies before they change their minds. They don't hold still. They open in the first hour, and by noon the petals are lying in the furrows like spilt ink, so I've taken to cutting them early with Father's bread knife and carrying them home in my apron.
I cut one for you on Sunday, the longest I could find, with the stem left whole down to where the leaf starts to curl and go grey. Its head is the colour of the sealing wax on your last letter, darker underneath where the light can't reach. I've wrapped it in waxed paper and tucked it into the biscuit tin with your spare socks. You'll grumble about the socks, but Cook will forgive you if you ask nicely.
Mrs Pryce says a poppy in a letter means someone is coming home. I told her that was superstition, and she told me that was what they said about sailors too, so we have reached an impasse.
By the time this reaches you, the bloom will be a brown smudge at the bottom of the tin. So look at the stem. It goes on a long way, and it doesn't stop where the flower does.
Love, Nell
