Snarling panda with ink splatter on chest
Chest · Mixed · Photo
A snarling panda head with its mouth open and teeth bared fills the upper chest, with its ear and body fading into the skin. The shading is loose and watercolour-like, with soft grey washes and bold black splatter marks spreading across the chest and shoulder. Red and pink tones appear in the open mouth and around the nose, while the rest of the design is in black and grey.

Dear Tomas,

The mule train came over the Yanjing pass on Tuesday with one animal missing, and the men swear it was not stolen but walked off into the fog to hunt the panda that has been raiding the bamboo below the col. I told them pandas do not snarl at mules, that they are the gentlest creatures on the mountain, and Old Wen laughed and said I had never heard one roar. He was right. I heard it on Thursday night, a sound like a cart dragged over stones, and when I went out with the lamp there was a black shape at the edge of the snow with its mouth wide open and its teeth showing red in the light.
I did not run. I thought of your father's ink pots, how he would knock them across the good paper when he was angry and then coax a picture out of the mess. The animal looked at me the way a creditor looks at a debtor. Then it turned and went down into the mist, and where it had stood the snow was spattered dark, as if someone had flicked a loaded brush across the white.
The mule came back on Saturday, fat and pleased with itself. Wen says it spent the night in the hollow below the rocks, that the panda shared the warm stones with it and neither of them complained. I have decided to believe him.
Yours, Ailsa
