Wolf head with skulls and daggers
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pen drawing on paper of a snarling wolf head centred between two animal skulls, with leaves behind them and daggers radiating outwards above and below. The linework is bold and even, with stippled dotwork shading in the leaves and around the skulls. The design is in black ink only, with the composition symmetrical and filling the sheet.

The second skull rolled off the tailgate somewhere past the cattle grid, and I stood on the brakes anyway, because my mother taught me that bones were money and money did not roll away on its own. Dust hung over the Sallow Flat road like a sheet nobody had bothered to fold. I walked back a hundred yards with the heat coming up through my boots, found the skull face down in the scrub, and turned it over. Coyote, or near enough. Its teeth were still set in a snarl that looked almost like a grin.

Dessa Vell was waiting at the Hollin Wells marker with two more in a feed sack. She had the stubborn look of a woman who had walked further than she would ever admit. 'You're late, Tomas,' she said, and took the skull from me without thanks. 'The wolf's the one you want. Ask Father Ruddock. He keeps a pair of skulls on the chapel gate and a wolf's head carved over the door, with the leaves wound round it like it grew there.'
We drove the last miles with the sack wedged between us. She told me the daggers had been nailed along the chapel roofline the year the rains quit, one for every family that left. I said I didn't believe her, and she only laughed and pointed at the horizon, where the sun was sliding straight down the road like a blade. 'Count them when you get there,' she said. 'Then tell me I'm wrong.'
At the chapel the gate was bare. The skulls had gone, and the roof bristled with a dozen dark strokes against the sky, exactly as many as I had carried in the back of the truck. Dessa climbed down, lifted the sack, and walked inside without looking round. I sat in the cab until the light went, counting them again.
