Snarling wolf head on the neck

Traditional · Neck · Mixed · Photo

A large snarling wolf head fills the front of the neck, with bared fangs, a purple-red mouth and orange eyes. The fur is rendered with bold outlines, grey shading and feathered texture. Coloured tattoos on the upper chest and shoulders are partly visible at the bottom of the frame against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tuesday, 14 March. Still no land in sight and the cook swears the beast in the forward hold has started counting the watches. It came aboard at St John's in a crate lined with sacking, paid for in cod-liver oil and a borrowed knife, and nobody on the Maud Tresler would say whose it was. Mr Ashby calls it the Parson because it sits with its head down like a man at grace.

The eyes are the thing. Orange as the lamp in the binnacle, and when the watch changes they follow the second mate from hatch to rail. Last night I went down with the slop bucket and found it had worked its jaws through the slats, not to bite, only to hold the wood, the way a dog holds a stick it has decided not to give back. Its breath smelled of salt pork and iron. I did not sleep.

Ashby came up from the cabin this morning with a face the colour of tallow and a parcel wrapped in oilcloth. Inside was a silver collar engraved with a name I will not write down, because the captain has forbidden talk of it, and a note in a hand I knew from the Ridley pier ledgers. The wolf had been owed to someone. We have been carrying a debt across the Atlantic in a box.

I have unlatched the crate. I told the men it was for the pump. The wolf walked out past the galley, stopped at the rail, and looked north, where there is nothing but grey water and the edge of the ice. Then it lay down on the deck with its chin on its paws. Ashby says it will be over the side by dawn. I think it has simply decided where it is going, and that none of us was asked.
