Neo-traditional wolf head with red eyes and a gold-hilted dagger through it, tattooed on a calf.

Wolf and dagger on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A snarling grey wolf head with bared fangs and glowing red eyes fills the leg, with a gold-hilted dagger driven down through its skull. Bold dark outlines, soft grey shading and red blood detail give it a bold, illustrative look. Red and gold ink accent the grey and black base, and the photo is taken at an angle on a wooden floor.

The wolf came to the orchard at Harrowgate the winter the frost killed the pears. It did not go for the hens or the lambs. Mistress Aud saw it first from the kitchen step, standing among the bare rose canes with its eyes lit red as coals in a banked grate. She did not cry out. She took her husband's gold-hilted dagger from its hook above the salt box, the one he had carried through the border wars and never once drawn in anger.

Her son Tobin followed her out with a lantern, shaking. The wolf did not run. It sat beside the sundial and looked at the cut stump of the old yew, which the family had felled for timber the summer before. "You took my roots," it said, in a voice like wet gravel. "Every rose you planted has been dying since." Tobin dropped the lantern, snatched the dagger from his mother's belt and drove it through the grey skull before she could speak.

The beast did not die quickly. Red ran from its jaws onto the frozen path, and the lantern guttered on the flagstones while the eyes went slowly from coals to ash. Aud knelt in the blood and found she could not be glad of it. The orchard stayed silent for three days, and then the frost broke.

That spring the roses came up at the root in a red so deep it looked wet, and a green shoot pushed through the yew stump. Nobody in Harrowgate has pulled a rose since.
