Snow White and Alice thigh tattoos

Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The left thigh shows a coloured tattoo of Snow White in a scrolled ornamental frame, topped by a golden crown, with red apples, green leaves and a small bird. The right thigh carries a black linework outline of Alice in a similar frame, with a Cheshire Cat above her and floral details, and it has not yet been filled with colour. The image is a close, centred shot of both legs in dark shorts against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down on the bench, mind the wasps, and don't touch the fruit on the wall, for that is the old Blenheim tree and it has never once been civil to strangers. My grandmother told me this when I was small, and I tell it to you now because the fruit has come in early this year, which means somebody has been talking to it.

The walled garden at Scarrow belonged to a glasshouse man called Tobias Quill, who grafted a red apple onto a crooked crab stock the summer his wife wandered off down the rabbit path after a cat with a grin wider than its face. The cat never came back, but it left its grin in the boughs, and on still evenings you can see it between the leaves, bright as a lamp. Tobias painted his wife twice, once in colour for the parlour and once in pencil for the tool shed, and he never finished the pencil one. He said she had to be coloured in by someone who had been lost too.

One October a girl came over the wall with a paintbox and a crown of hawthorn. She sat under the tree and began filling the portrait in, one petal at a time, and the bird that roosted in the crab stock flew down and asked what she wanted. "Only the colour back," she said. "And an apple." The bird took a seed from her palm and dropped it in the turned earth. By morning there was a tree as tall as the wall, heavy with fruit, and the girl was gone, but the portrait was finished, and the painted lady was smiling in a way she never had before.
