Snow White and Alice outline designs on thighs
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The top half shows two traced paper designs: Snow White with an apple, a crown and birds, and Alice with playing cards, a teacup, a pocket watch and the Cheshire Cat. The bottom photographs show the same ornate, floral-framed artwork as black outline work on the backs of the thighs, with a heart keyhole, sword, squirrel and flowers in the scrollwork. The work is line only, with no shading or colour visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ada Rennie had traced the pictures twice before the pit hooter went, once in pencil on the back of a wage slip and once in ink, because her mother said ink was what lasted. Her father had found the two books in a skip outside the Co-op in Easington Colliery, their covers gone soft as bread, and had carried them home under his coat as if they were coal he had no right to.

In the evenings, while the kitchen range ticked and cooled, she laid tracing paper over the Snow White page and then the Alice page and worked the scrollwork round each face. Roses that were really just loops. A squirrel she gave a hazelnut. A heart with a keyhole, because Snow White had a dwarf for every chore and Ada had a father who came home grey to the eyebrows and would never ask for help. Alice got the playing cards and the pocket watch, because Ada liked a girl who was always late and didn't mind. The Cheshire Cat grinned from the top of the frame where the crown should have been, and her mother said he looked like the Lord Mayor after a pint.
On the Sunday her father came up from the wash-house with his lamp still clipped to his cap and stood a long time over the table. He didn't say the drawings were nice. He lifted the Alice tracing, turned it to the window, and found the teacup she had drawn with a small chip in its rim, exactly where the real one sat on their dresser.
"You've put the chip in," he said.
"It's a good chip," Ada said. "Shows it's been used."
He laughed so hard he had to sit down on the step.
