Solar system down the spine
Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo
A woman seen from behind wears a black felt hat with a gold chain and a pale lace top with an open back. Small planets in a vertical row run down the centre of her spine, with Saturn and its rings near the middle. The fine linework is shaded softly in pink, orange, blue and green, and the tattoo sits against plain skin with a blurred woodland background.

The castle at Halewood had lost its roof before anyone living could remember, but the stair in the north tower still went up, one step for each year the old lord had counted off on a knotted rope. At the top, the wall held a row of small painted discs that the masons had set there when the keep was new, one above another like beads on a string. The village children called them the lamps, though no candle had ever been lit there.

Each spring a miller's girl named Ada climbed the stair to count them. She went up with a pocket of chalk and a heel of bread for the jackdaws. The discs were pink at the top, then ochre, then a cold blue, then green at the foot, and in the middle sat one with a grey ring round it like a hoop of wet ash. Her grandmother said the ring was a crown that had been left in the sky, and that a crown kept up there would keep the lamps turning.
One spring the ring had gone pale and the blue had dulled to milk. Ada scraped at it with her thumbnail and found only plaster. She sat on the top step until the light went out of the arrow slit, then took the chalk and drew the ring herself, round and careful, the way her grandmother drew loaves on the oven door. Below her the valley lamps came on one by one, and the miller's wife said afterwards that the whole row had shone that night like a thread pulled tight.
Ada never told anyone how she had done it. She kept the chalk in her apron and went up each spring with bread, and the ring stayed grey and faithful above the valley for as long as she climbed the stair.
