The tattoo shows a row of planets arranged in a vertical line down the centre of the upper back, with smaller planets spaced above and below a larger, ringed Saturn. Each planet is shaded to show a sphere, with soft gradients in orange, blue, green and cream. The woman is seen from behind against a bare, blurred woodland backdrop, with her hair and a black felt hat framing the tattoo.

Dear Ruth, the orrery finally works. I found it under a tarpaulin in the old chapel at Harrowgate Keep, brass arms gone green, the sun wheel missing its gold cap. Mr Pell at the village shop says the Lindqvist family built it in 1890 for the chaplain's boy, and nobody has wound it since the roof came in.

I spent four evenings with a tin of oil and a borrowed pair of pliers. Saturn was the hardest. Its ring had snapped at one join, so I bound the wire with thread from Mum's sewing box, the blue spool you swore I'd never miss. On the fifth night the arms turned without grinding. Mercury went round, then Venus, then the cream and rust of Jupiter, each little sphere catching the lamp as if it had been painted that morning.
When I set the crank to the date you gave me, the planets slid into a single line through the broken west window, and I stood there like a fool with my hand still on the brass. I thought of Dad counting them off on our back step, pointing past the chimney pots. Nobody else was in the chapel to see it, so I am telling you instead.
Come up in September. Bring a spare spool of blue thread. We'll wind the orrery together and see whether Saturn's ring holds.
