Fine line key on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small ornate key is drawn in fine grey linework, running vertically down the centre of the upper back. The bow is decorated with a scrolled, open design and the shaft narrows to a simple bit at the base. The subject is photographed from behind against a blurred green outdoor background, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The water in Lock Nine had dropped a foot overnight, and Nell found the key where the gate paddle met the mud, its bow furred with green weed. She rinsed it in the cut and held it up against the grey sky. Scrolls curled open in the bow like a fern unfurling, and the bit at the base was no longer than her thumb. Her father would say it had come off somebody's coal hatch and was not worth the walk.

She tried it on everything aboard the Mabel Jane that had a lock: the tiller box, the gas locker, the brass padlock on the water tank that her uncle had fitted and never explained. Nothing turned. Each failed attempt made the key feel heavier in her palm, as though it had been holding a door shut rather than waiting to open one.
Three locks down, by the disused mill, she stopped at the lock-keeper's hut. Its windows were boarded, but the door still had a cast iron keyhole worn smooth at the edges. The bit slid in and turned with a sound like a breath let out after a long wait. Inside there was only a kettle, a stack of damp ledgers, and a chalk tally on the wall of boats passing through. The last entry was three years old, and beside it someone had written MABEL in careful capitals, then rubbed it out.
That evening Nell hung the key on the nail above the stove, where the bow caught the lamplight. The ledgers could keep their secrets until morning.
