Small mandala tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, centred mandala-style design with a dotted inner ring, an outer star-like outline and short radiating points sits on the side of an ankle. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading. The skin tone is light, and the blurred background shows a yellow ballet flat and a grey floor.

The rose window in Saint Eudra's had been cracked since the winter the bells froze, and nobody in Calder's Reach would pay a glazier to mend it because nobody could agree what it had been. Old Maud said a sun. The bishop said a wheel of seven spokes. I said nothing, because I had the only drawing, and it was in my own hand, copied from a shard I'd pocketed as a boy.

It took me until the thaw to understand the design. Every ring turned on itself. Dots marched round the centre like sparks off a struck flint, then the star-points opened outward, each one a short ray with a drop at its tip, the way rain hangs from a gutter before it falls. I cut the inner circle first, eleven pieces of amber, and set them with lead so fine my fingers bled on the came.
The bishop came up the scaffold on the last morning, grumbling about cold stone. He held his breath when the light came through. The floor filled with a small, exact sun, thrown in fragments across the flagstones, and for a moment the whole nave looked as if it had been stitched together from thread.
He asked what I wanted. I told him I wanted nothing, only that he keep the north door shut so the wind wouldn't take the sun away. He laughed and agreed. It was the first time anyone in Calder's Reach had kept a promise I'd asked for.
