Solar system planets across a upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A woman with her hair tied up is photographed from behind, showing a row of planets and a sun across her upper back. The sun sits at the left shoulder blade in orange and yellow, followed by planets in blue, green, brown, grey and teal, one with a ringed outline. The planets are spaced in a gentle curve against soft, blurred green foliage.

Sit down, the lot of you, the band are still having their tea and I've got the floor till they come back. You'll have heard of Mrs Pardoe who kept the ballroom clock at Saltmere. She wound it every Sunday with a key the size of a herring, and nobody thought much of her until the August the sun came unpinned from the sky.

Not fell, exactly. It slipped its hook in the night, the way a brass badge comes off a coat, and rolled down over the marsh, where it lay smoking in the reeds like a dropped penny. Mrs Pardoe went out at dawn in her slippers with a bucket. She found it still warm, a ball of orange glass no bigger than a plum, and she said, well, that's a nuisance, and carried it home in her apron.
She could not put it back up. So she hung it on the wall beside the coat hooks, and she hung the others alongside it: the blue one from the pond, the green one from the allotment, the brown one she'd won in a raffle, the grey and the teal, and the ringed one a man on the pier swore had been a wedding present to Saturn. She set them in a gentle curve, the way you'd lay out a dance card, and every evening she stood at the foot of the stairs and waited for them to start turning.
They did, on the third night, with a sound like a hall full of people tapping their feet. The dancers below stopped mid-step and looked up, and that, my loves, is why the ballroom floor at Saltmere has been slightly warm ever since.
