Spider web on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small radial spider web sits on the upper back, close to the shoulder blade, with the head and hair of the wearer partly visible at the top of the frame. The design is drawn in thin black linework, with fine concentric rings and spokes that radiate from a dense centre. The image is in black and white, and the background of dark trees keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The wind has come round to the north again, and the nets on the drying poles are stiff with salt. You don't mind. Your grandmother taught you to mend on the step of the net loft with a wooden needle and a hank of tarred twine, and your hands still know the knots before you do. Out past the breakwater the boats are coming in low in the water, and Ruth from the shop is already counting them off on her fingers.

Nobody on Sker Holm believes in luck, but they believe in the web. Every autumn the orb-weavers climb out of the heather and string their rings between the fence posts and the gorse, and every morning the dew hangs on them like fine glass beads. Your father would stand at the gate with his pipe and say the spiders knew the weather before the shipping forecast did, because they built to catch whatever the wind carried in. You thought that was nonsense until the year the Verity went out in a blow and the web on the lintel was gone by dawn, shredded flat, and the wind never came back that day.
So when the boats are in and the light goes thin and gold across the water, you walk the long track to the old mill and find the big radial web strung between the dead sails. It is perfect. Every spoke is taut, every ring spaced as if measured with a rule. You stand under it a long time. Then you take out the needle, cut a single strand of your own twine, and go back to work, because the sea is patient, but the nets are not.
