Solid black circle with small dots on upper back

Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large solid black circle sits on the upper back, with a small pale dot near its upper right edge and a smaller solid black dot below it. The fill appears dense and even with a slightly textured finish, and the design is set against plain skin with a light, neutral background of papers and drawings. The image is entirely black ink with no colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The shutter had come up from the harbour office on a cart, a black iron disc as wide as a cartwheel, and Ada Pell hated it from the first evening she bolted it across the lantern. Every dusk she climbed the iron stair at Scarrow Point with the oil can in one hand and her wet coat still dripping, and every dusk she shut out the coast, the way you might pull a blind on a house where someone is sleeping badly.

The men in the office said the Germans could see a lit lighthouse from twelve miles out, so the glass had to go dark. Ada kept one thing to herself. She had punched a pinhole through the iron near its rim, no wider than a threepenny bit, so that a single thread of light still reached the water. Only the Sallow brothers knew to look for it, and only Ada knew they were watching. A small black gull, bold as a clerk, landed on the shutter's edge each night and waited with her for the boats.

On the ninth night the thread of light found a dinghy with no lamp of its own, rowing blind past the Skerries. Ada watched a torch answer from the water, flashed twice and then twice again, and understood that the Sallow boys were bringing the boat home by her pinhole alone. She wrote the bearing in the log in a steady hand, then climbed out onto the gallery and rolled the shutter back one inch, so the whole coast could see the dark had a light at its edge. The gull lifted off, unbothered, and went after the boat.
