Solar system planets on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical row of small planets and dots runs along the inner forearm, with a banded planet near the middle and a ringed planet below it. The linework is fine and the planets are shaded with stippling and light hatching to suggest their form. The photograph is black and white, showing the forearm against bedding with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Every spring the carters on the upper road swore that the boy who crossed at Halsa Ford carried the sky on his arm, and nobody believed them until the guard made him roll his sleeve up.

The guard was called Tomas Brisk, and he had a ledger with every bale, goat and cooking pot the valley had sent over in forty years. He held the boy's wrist under the lamp. Down the inside of the forearm ran a row of small round things, some no bigger than a lentil, and near the middle a striped ball with a ring of stone around it, and below that another ball with a thinner ring. Tomas asked what they were. The boy said the little ones near the elbow were the ones that had been lost on the road, and the striped one was the big keeper of the others. The ringed one, he said, was his grandfather's, who had wanted something to carry that would not get heavy.
Tomas found nothing in the ledger to tax. He said so, and the boy said he had nothing to declare but the cold. Then the guard looked at the bottom dot, a little smudge by the wrist, and asked what that one was. The boy was quiet for a while. That one, he said, was his sister, who had stayed on the other side to mind the goats.
Tomas wrote nothing down. He closed the ledger, rolled his own sleeve up past the elbow and showed the bare skin there. Then he lifted the gate. The boy walked on across the ford with the lamp swinging behind him, and the dot by his wrist went out of sight first, the way the lowest things always do.
