Solar system planets on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A row of planets runs down the inner forearm, starting with small dots that grow into shaded spheres. Saturn and another ringed planet sit in the middle, with a banded planet above them and smaller dots below. The planets use fine stippled and line shading in black and grey, set against plain skin and a soft, out-of-focus bed in the background.

Nobody at Haverlow Junction could say who had first left the box on the bench under platform four, but by the time Edie Marsh found it on a wet Tuesday, the lost-property ledger already had a line for it: one wooden case, contents unknown, claimant not yet seen.

Inside, wrapped in a tea towel gone soft with damp, were nine small spheres of painted glass, each no bigger than a pea, and a card with a note in careful pencil capitals: ORDER MATTERS. Edie held the smallest one up to the lamp. It was a speck, barely more than a dot. Beside it lay one shaded with fine grey hatching, then one banded like a boiled sweet, then one with a thread of glass ringed around its waist. She counted them along the bench the way her father had taught her to count carriages, from the engine end back.
She spent the afternoon arranging them, turning each one until the rings sat level. The expresses thundered through without stopping, and the platform clock ticked past the hour she was due off. When she finally lined them up, the last small dot sat at the very edge of the bench, where the wood met the drop to the tracks, and she understood that the box had never been lost at all. It had been waiting for someone to see it was an arrangement, not an accident.
She wrote in the ledger: claimant is the one who keeps count. Then she set the box back on the bench, labelled, and left the lamp on for whoever came asking.
