Crescent moon on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon is tattooed on the inner forearm, drawn as a thin black outline. The lit side is left as bare skin while the shadowed edge is filled with fine dotwork stippling. The photograph is taken against a plain pale background, with a white sleeve and a hand with black nail polish at the top of the frame.

You learn the orchard by what the moon leaves out. Uncle Tomas, who kept the Cobb Lane trees for forty years, used to say the full moon was for show and the waning crescent was for picking, because a thin moon throws no light into the bottom branches and a picker has to trust her hands. He sent you up the Bramley ladder at eleven o'clock on the last warm night of August with a flask of cold tea, a canvas bucket that knocked against every rung, and the instruction to take only the fruit that gave when you lifted it.

"Leave the windfalls," he said from the gate. "Those belong to the wasps and the hedgehogs."
Up in the leaves the sky was a clean dark sheet with the moon cut into it, its lit edge pale as a fingernail and the rest of the disc only guessed at by the stars it blotted out. You worked by feel. Each apple came away with a small twist and a sound like someone unlatching a door. Somewhere past the hedge a dog barked twice and gave up.
Near the top of the ladder, wedged in the fork of the old Egremont where the bark had split, you found a biscuit tin with its lid taped down. Inside were forty years of pencil tallies, one line for every picking, and beside each night's line Tomas had drawn a small crescent, shaded at the edge with a hundred tiny dots, the way a man draws when he wants to remember the part of the moon he cannot see. Tonight's column was empty. You took the pencil from the tin's lid, drew your own curve, and found you had shaded it without meaning to.
