Sun and crescent moons on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a crescent moon sits above a sun with a face at its centre, with a second crescent moon below, all stacked vertically down the centre of the upper back. The sun has radiating rays and hatched shading in black ink, while the moons are solid black. The bare back fills most of the frame, with warm sunlight falling in bands across the skin and the hair gathered in a loose bun at the top.

The sun's left eye had worn smooth again, so I carried it down the south tower stairs wrapped in a square of flannel, the two crescent moons clinking in my apron pocket like spoons. In the kingdom of Aumery the great courtyard clock has always been read by its sun, a gilded disc with rays like a child's drawing and a face that the court swears is the first queen's own, mild and a little amused. The moons were never part of the clock. They lived in a drawer in Master Corran's workshop, and only came out at midwinter, when the old custom said they should be hung at the sun's upper and lower edges to keep the year from tipping over.

Master Corran had been dead a month, and no one had told me what to do with the custom. So I did what a clockmaker's apprentice does with a riddle: I took the mechanism apart. The sun turned on a brass spindle, and the moons, if I fixed them to the same spindle on hooks, would ride above and below it as the hour hand moved. I threaded the chain through the tower's old pulley and wound it by hand until the three shapes hung in a single column against the evening sky.
The courtyard went quiet. Somebody's bread stopped halfway to a mouth. Then the bell-ringer began to laugh, and a child shouted that the sun had a moon on either side of its face like a pair of earrings, and soon everyone was pointing up and shouting. I stood at the parapet with oil on my fingers and my shadow stretched long across the roof tiles, and I thought that Master Corran would have scolded me for the chain, and then, very quietly, that he would have wound it tighter.
