Songbird perched on a scrolling branch
Fine line · Colour · Flash
A fine brown ink drawing of a small songbird with a long tail, perched on a curled branch. Ornamental acanthus-style scrolls frame the bird, and the lower swirl is filled with tiny spiral dot patterns. The design is centred on a pale, aged parchment background with no body visible.

Margaret Osei had been copying the same songbird for three weeks, and it kept coming out wrong. Her tutor at the engraving works in Bath said the tail was too long, that a sparrow's tail was a sensible thing and not a ballgown. She tried again with a finer nib, the brown ink thinning as the afternoon wore on, while the bell at St Michael's rang the quarter over the yard.

On Saturdays the presses in the cellar were quiet. Only Mr Pell came down, to check the copperplate for hairline cracks, and he stopped behind her stool to look at the sheet. "That isn't a wren," he said. "That's the bird my father drew in the corner of every bill of lading he sent to Bristol. He said it sang only when the weather was about to turn."
She asked where the bird had gone. He shrugged and tapped the curl of acanthus she had drawn beneath it. "Went into the scrollwork, I should think. Those spirals were where he kept the notes."
That evening she unpicked the lower swirl and filled it with tiny spirals, row on row, the way a child counts stairs. When she held the parchment to the lamp, a faint pattern of dots showed through from the other side, like a line of music waiting to be read. The next morning she played it on the piano in the front room, and it was a plain hymn tune, a little flat, the way her father used to hum it while he worked.
