Sepia ink drawing of a horned owl with a fierce stare and detailed feathering, shown as a tattoo design on aged parchment.

Owl design on aged parchment

Black and grey · Flash

A front-facing owl with ear tufts, large staring eyes and a hooked beak, with each feather rendered in fine hatched and layered linework. The drawing is in warm brown ink on a mottled, yellowed parchment background, with shading built up through the wing feathers and chest. The owl's talons grip the lower edge of the composition, which is centred and fills most of the frame.

You find the owl on the lych gate post at Thornmere church before the bells have started, and it is watching you the way the vicar's sister watches a late guest. Its ear tufts are up. Its talons have a proper grip on the wood. You tell yourself owls are nocturnal and it has no business being awake at ten in the morning, but it has clearly decided the wedding is its business, and the bride's mother has been looking at it too.

Inside, the pews fill with the smell of wet wool and lilies. Your cousin Hal drops the rings twice in the porch and the owl does not blink once. When the vows come, you say yours to the flagstones because you cannot bear to meet those eyes. Somewhere in the second hymn you notice the bird has moved, one talon further along the lintel, as if it has been counting feathers in the congregation and has finally reached you.

After the register is signed, you go out to the lawn with a glass of cider and find the owl back on the gatepost, with a feather loose on the stone below it. You pick it up. It is brown and barred and smells faintly of smoke. The owl gives a single dry click of its beak, the sort of sound a man makes when he has finally seen the thing he was waiting for. Then it lifts off without a sound, as owls are supposed to, and you realise you have been holding your breath for the whole service.
