Soul meets body script on upper thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the words soul meets body written in a single line of black cursive script across smooth skin. The linework is fairly fine and even, with the letters joined and the final y sweeping down to the right. The image is in warm, low-contrast tones with the subject filling most of the frame and a loose fabric edge visible at the top.

Dear Tom,

The ward is quiet tonight, the kind of quiet that makes you listen for things that aren't there. Mrs Okonedo in bay four has been asking for her husband again, and I've told her he's coming in the morning, which is a lie I've got quite good at. I sat with her until the drip alarm stopped nagging, then I went to the drawer where we keep the belongings bags, because someone has to check the labels and nobody else will at this hour.
In the bottom of a bag from Thursday there was a small notebook, the sort a chemist sells by the till. The writer had a hand like fine wire, every letter joined to the next, and on the last page, in the middle of nothing, were three words: soul meets body. Nothing before it, nothing after. Just that, pressed hard enough to show through on the back of the leaf.
I should say I did not read the rest. I did put the notebook in the property safe with a new label, and I wrote the date on it in my own careful capitals, which is the only way I know to be fair. Then I went back to bay four and held her hand while she told me about the garden they had in Lagos, the mango tree by the gate, and I did not once think about how much I wanted you there to hear it.
Come up at Easter. Bring the good tea. I'll show you the notebook if they let me keep a copy.
Love, Jo
