Sound wave tattoo on a forearm at a concert
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised forearm and hand fill the foreground of a black and white photo taken from a seat above a crowded concert arena. A small, thin black line tattoo of a sound wave runs across the inner forearm towards the wrist. The background shows a large glowing waveform light display above the stage, with phone lights and screens among the audience.

The reel came to me in a biscuit tin, wrapped in a bank statement from 1979, and Mrs Okonedo at the council said nobody had dared play it since the flood. I cleaned the tape with isopropyl and a cotton bud the way my father taught me, then threaded it onto the old Revox in the back room of the record office, where the radiators knock like someone wanting to be let in.

The recording was a single concert in a school hall in Wrexham, the crowd loud and lit by cigarette lighters rather than phones. But on the third track the needle on my oscilloscope began to draw a shape I knew, a long jagged ridge like mountains seen from a train window. When I laid the printout beside the pencil sketch pinned to the tin lid, the two matched line for line. Someone had drawn the wave the way a nurse draws a pulse, small and dark and certain.
I rang the number written on the lid. A woman answered, older than her voice suggested, and said her brother had played that night and never finished the last song. She asked whether the wave was still steady on the tape. I said yes. She said, then he is still in the hall, and hung up before I could ask which hall.
I played the final track twice before I went home. On the second pass the bulb in the car park seemed to pulse in time through the window, and I found myself counting under my breath, one for each crest, until the bus came and carried me off into the rain.
