Two people's hands are clasped, with a small crescent moon outline tattooed on the inside of each wrist. The linework is thin and single-needle style, in black ink with no shading, and the moons sit at a similar size and angle. The photograph is monochrome and framed close, with one wrist wearing a beaded bracelet and fingers with pale nails visible.

Now sit closer, and mind the lamp, it's been smoking since Tuesday. Morwenna Pell and her cousin Ada kept the light on Scarrow Head the winter the boats stopped coming in. Every night they climbed the one hundred and twelve steps, and every night they argued over who would take the second watch, because the first was always the colder and the second was always the lonelier.

They had a pact, scratched with a pin into the back page of the logbook. Whoever reached the gallery first would mark the sky for the other with a half moon, so the one below could find her in the dark. Ada laughed at it. Morwenna did not. She drew the crescents on both their wrists with a sewing needle and a pot of India ink from the stores, and they stung for a week, and neither of them complained.

The storm came in February, the kind that lifts the paint off the gallery rail. The fog swallowed the beam by nine. Ada was out on the rocks with the hand lantern when the swell rose, and Morwenna, up top, watched the dark water where her cousin should have been. So she did the only thing she could think of. She turned the great shutter in slow stops, opening and closing it so the light fell on the sea in a crescent, the sign they had agreed on, and she kept it turning until her arms gave out.

Ada came up the steps at dawn, soaked to the bone and cursing, holding her wrist up to the glass like a lantern of her own. Morwenna had not slept. They never spoke of it. The keepers who came after found the logbook with two half moons pressed in the margin, one a little smudged, and beneath them, in Ada's hand, a single line: Look for the moon, and someone will be looking back.
