Infinity and arrow on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of an infinity symbol crossed by an arrow sits on the inner forearm near the wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The warm, out-of-focus background and resting hand keep the tattoo as the sharp focal point in the right third of the frame.

Nobody asks for umbrellas at Calder Junction in July, so I was surprised when the lad from the signal box came to the lost property hatch holding a platform ticket between two fingers. He said he'd found it wedged under the bench on Platform Four, and that someone had drawn on the back. I turned it over. A thin loop lay on its side, the way the number eight does when it has lost its nerve, and through the middle of it ran an arrow, feathers at the top, point at the bottom.

The ticket was dated 14 March, and the clerk who logged it had written only 'drawing, no name'. I knew the handwriting on the log. It was mine, from my first week, when I was too young to understand that people leave marks in odd places to see whether anyone notices. I told the lad to keep his pencil and we walked out to the bench together. Above us a late Crewe service hummed in on the fast line, and the loop track curved away round the old goods yard before swinging back to the same platform, as it always had.
I put the ticket in the tray with the other odds, a cracked compass and a glove that fits nobody. Then I wrote on the card in capitals: UNCLAIMED, FOUND PLATFORM FOUR, SEE ARROW. Some things in this place are meant to go round and come back, and some are meant to be sent on, and I have never been able to tell which from the front of the hatch.
I hung the card on its hook so the arrow pointed at the door, where anyone leaving would have to walk straight into it.
