Spiral galaxy and atom on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A spiral galaxy with glowing orange core, scattered red and white stars and blue-grey arms fills the forearm, with a stylised atom symbol of white orbital rings at its centre. Soft shading and blended colour give the galaxy depth, while dark, fractured edges around the design suggest skin splitting open to reveal the space within. The photo is taken straight on against a black leather backdrop.

Hold the lamp closer, Tom, and stop fidgeting with that kettle, because this is the part where my father lost his temper. That was the winter the ground froze so hard the ploughs rang like church bells, and the sheep stood in the lower field with frost on their backs like old coats. One morning the ice on the top pasture split in a long crack, the way a pond does when a boot stamps it, only this crack ran up past the hedge and into the sky.

My father took the lantern up the hill because he was the stubborn one, and he saw through that split not black night but a great slow spiral of dust and light, turning like the wheel of a mill race. Its heart was the colour of a banked fire. Round the heart ran a little ring of white, circling a bright bead like a hoop around a hub, and the stars scattered out from it were red and silver, sprinkled like seed. He said the sheep went silent behind him, every one, and that the wind dropped as if someone had shut a door.

He tried to bring the old mare Bess up to look, but she planted her hooves and would not pass the gap. So he tipped a handful of barley into his palm and held it up, and the grains lifted away from him, drifting into that turning light, round and round until he could not tell them from the stars. Nobody knows where they went. But when the thaw came and the crack sealed itself with a sound like a long sigh, the barley came up in a perfect spiral across the top field, and every lamb born there that spring had a flick of orange in its eyes.
