Two crows and blossom branches on upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

Two crows sit on thin branches, one perched high at the top of the arm and one lower down, with a few red blossoms among the twigs. The birds are rendered with soft, painterly black and grey shading and loose, feathered edges. The red accents are small and sit against a light background, so the composition stays dominated by the dark birds.

I have not fed them. I want you to know that before you tell me off. But I have been leaving the lid off the biscuit tin, which is not the same thing, and Mr Hale will say so when he next climbs up with the paraffin.

The smaller one came down onto the branch the gale snapped off the wall last month, and sat there with the red buds bursting out of the twigs around its feet. I thought of the way you used to whistle through your teeth at the boats coming in. It looked at me the way you did when I said I would wait, patient and a bit unimpressed.

Anyway. The light was checked on Tuesday and the lens is clean. The crows stay. Come home when the relief boat docks and bring me something that isn't tinned peaches.

Yours, Ellen
