Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A slender spear or blade runs diagonally down the arm, with a small ornate tip at the top and a pointed head at the bottom. Three or four thin circles overlap the shaft, and some of the shaft has fine hatching and small dotted details. The tattoo is rendered in black linework with soft grey shading on a plain skin background.

Ada had not meant to bring the spear home from the boundary oak, only to see whether it would come out of the trunk. It came easily, the way a splinter does when it has been waiting. The shaft was cold and grey, the tip at the top was worked into a small crown, and when she turned it the three hoops of old bronze around its neck caught the late light and knocked faintly against each other.

Her grandmother had said the wood beyond the mill belonged to nobody, which was how the trouble started. Men from the lower village had cut into the forest for ship timber, and the woodsmen had cursed them, and the spear had been driven into the oak as a warning by whoever kept the boundary before anyone could remember. Nobody in Hollin Brook would touch it. Ada touched it.

That night the rings on the shaft began to slide, one over another, the way the moon passes behind its own halo. Her father found her at the hearth with the blade across her knees and its point turned towards the door, and he did not ask her to put it down. He only asked which way the wind was blowing. She said the wrong way, and he nodded as though that was the answer he had feared.

In the morning the forest had drawn back a field's width, and the timber carts stood empty on the road with their axles sunk to the hub in old leaf mould. Ada walked the boundary with the spear over her shoulder and drove its point into the earth at the edge of the trees. She left it standing there, a grey shaft with three circles, and went home to bake the bread.
