Geometric arrow on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single arrow runs diagonally across the forearm, with its feathered fletching at the upper left and a diamond-shaped head at the lower right. Circles, a dashed arc, a small triangle and dots are placed along the shaft, drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading. The design is in black ink only and sits centred on a pale forearm against a dark leather background.

The 22:14 is eleven minutes late, and you have run out of ways to explain it to the board. Rain has been coming sideways across the platform since teatime, and the lamp above the down line hums the same flat note it has hummed for thirty years. You tap the glass of the block instrument twice, the way Dorothy taught you, and watch the needle refuse to settle.

Dorothy kept a pencil behind her ear and a diagram folded inside the cover of her logbook: a straight line for the track, a dashed curve where the loop used to run before the council lifted it, and a ring for every station she had ever worked. She drew the arrows herself, always pointing the same way, towards the sea. "Trains don't go anywhere," she told you once, "they just get pointed." You thought she was being clever. You understand her now.
At 22:25 the bell rings and the signal drops, and somewhere beyond the cutting a headlamp swings round the bend like a coin spinning on a table. You pull the lever. The points clack. The train slides through the loop where the dashed curve used to be, and for one second the whole night lines up, straight as a shaft, diamond-tipped, exactly as drawn.
When the tail lamp has gone and the rain eases to a drip from the canopy, you open the logbook at the back page and add one more ring beside Dorothy's last entry. Then you draw an arrow through it, pointing out of the station, and write the time beside it: 22:26, on time for once.
