Arrow with geometric circles on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical arrow runs along the forearm, with feathered fletching at the top, a bound shaft and a barbed head at the bottom. Fine black linework and hatching shade the arrow, while thin circles and straight construction-style lines overlay the design behind it. The tattoo is in black and grey, with the skin evenly lit against a dark backdrop.

Ada Penhallow had been promised the turntable at Carlow Junction would be finished by Michaelmas, and by the second week of September she had stopped believing anyone who said so. She knelt on the cinder bank with a chalk line pulled taut between two pegs, her compass hooked on the top one, and swept an arc that had to meet the pit wall exactly or the engine would sit crooked for ever.

Her father had drawn the original plan on linen, in ink the colour of wet slate. He had taught her that a circle is only honest if you start from a fixed point and return to it without cheating. Behind her the 4.15 was blowing off steam, and a porter was shouting about the cattle wagons, but she kept her hand steady until the curve closed.
Near the water tower stood a signal post someone had painted with a red arrow pointing up the line, its feathering chipped down to bare iron. Ada had always thought it looked like something that had been shot and then forgiven. When she stood to brush the chalk from her skirt, she saw the foreman coming towards her with the revised drawing folded under his arm, and the set of his mouth told her the circle was wrong after all.
She read the new figures standing up, the wind pulling at the corners of the paper. The pit would have to sit a yard to the left, where her father's plan had been wrong from the start. Ada knelt again, pressed the compass point into the cinders, and began the arc a second time.
