Spider and band logo on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large black spider with long, angular legs sits above the My Chemical Romance logo, which is drawn in rough black lettering with red shading. The linework is bold and sketchy, with solid black fills on the spider body and heavy strokes on the letters. Black ink dominates, with small red accents, and the tattoo fills most of the forearm against a plain background.

The spider had lived behind the proscenium of the Empire for longer than Dennis had worked nights there, and in eleven years he had never once seen her come down from the flies. Every Thursday he climbed the iron ladder with a bucket of warm water and a stiff brush, because the old marquee had to be clean enough to read from the bus stop, and every Thursday she was waiting at the centre of her web, long legs folded like a closed umbrella, as if she had been told he was coming.

By the autumn the web held more than flies. It had snagged a torn playbill, a ticket stub from the last variety show, a brass button from a conductor's coat, and then, after the gale that took the top three letters off the sign, the letters themselves. Dennis found them lined along the lighting bar in a neat black and red row, each one tied to the next with a thread so fine it caught the work lamp like frost. He did not touch them. He only brushed the dust from the rail and said, to nobody, that the council men were coming on Monday with a flatbed.
On Sunday night he climbed up alone. The web was empty. The letters lay on the stage boards below, arranged in a single line that ran from the footlights to the fire curtain, and beside the last one something had pressed a small dark mark into the dust, eight points spreading out like a hand that had been holding on for a long time. Dennis took off his cap. He left the brush on the rail, climbed down, and turned the house lights up, so that anyone passing on the pavement could read the word that had been spelled out for them, even without the sign.
