The first loaves were already cooling on the rack when Dariusz noticed the sky over the Humber had gone the colour of wet slate. He wiped flour from his knuckles and went to the back door, where his mother's black umbrella hung on a brass hook beside the proving cabinet. She had carried it to every market in the county and never once opened it indoors, because she said it would bring the house a storm of its own.

The delivery van was due at quarter past five for the Saturday order: forty brown bags for the church hall and twelve sourdough cobs for the café on Queen Street. Dariusz counted them twice, then a third time, because counting gave his hands something to do while the thunder rolled up off the water. The first flash lit the flour sacks white. He counted to four before the sound arrived, then to three, then to two.
Ruth from the café had phoned at midnight to say her van had a flat tyre and she would walk down for the bread if somebody could leave it at the side gate. He had said he would. He had not said that he would be the one carrying it through the rain, but there was nobody else awake on the street, and the drops were already drumming on the skylight like someone impatient to be let in.
He took the umbrella from its hook and shook it open in the doorway, breaking his mother's rule, and felt the old fabric snap taut above him. Out past the bins the lightning split the cloud in two, and for one bright second the whole yard was lit like noon. Then the dark came back. He stepped out with the bread held against his chest and let the first drops strike the red panels rather than the loaves.
