Matching blue and red forearm symbol tattoos

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms show matching tattoos of a triangle enclosing a circle with a vertical line through it, with fine black outlines. The left tattoo has a blue wash with interlaced lines inside the circle, and the right has a red wash, with drips running down from both designs. The composition is close and centred, with the wrists touching and coloured bracelets visible below.

The 21:14 to Carlisle was already sliding out of Platform Nine when Nell caught my sleeve at the bottom of the footbridge stairs. We had agreed to this at two in the morning over cold chips, the way people agree to things they only regret in daylight, and now the guard was blowing his whistle and the diesel was rising through the grating like something warm and bad-tempered.

Back in March we had sat in a room above a launderette in Holbeck while a man called Desmond ruled the triangle with a steel rule and a pencil behind his ear. The circle was freehand. The vertical line through it, he said, was the hardest, because it had to look like it had always been there. Nell wanted the blue because she said it was the colour of the signal lamps on a wet night. I took the red because I was the one who would be sitting in the wrong carriage, stubborn and warm, waiting to be told where the train went.

Desmond had warned us the washes would run. 'Watercolour settles,' he said, pressing a paper towel to my arm. 'In a year you won't see the edges of either of them.' Then he grinned and said that was the whole point of matching.

Now the station lamps buzzed overhead and she held her wrist beside mine, blue against red, the drips running down toward our fingers as if the ink wanted to catch the last train too. Neither of us said anything. The whistle went again. She pulled free, climbed the carriage step two at a time, and turned in the doorway with her palm flat against the glass.

I stood under the clock until the train was a red light and then nothing at all, and for the first time I could not tell which of the two marks on my arm was mine.
