Spiral heart sketch design
Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn heart outline with a spiral running from its top edge into the centre. The linework is dark and slightly rough, with grey shading along the inner edges that gives the lines some depth. The design sits centred on a plain white background with no other elements.

The access plate on Level Nine was still warm when Dagny handed me the sealant gun and told me to close it up. That was the first thing I didn't like. Nothing on Halden Wheel stayed warm for long, not since the coolant had been rerouted. I knelt on the grating and worked the old bolts loose one by one, and the warmth came up through the metal like a pulse.

Behind the plate the conduit ran in a tight spiral, wrapping inward toward the hydroponic core, and someone had scratched a heart into the wall beside it. The lines were rough, pressed hard with a stylus, and the spiral ran from the top curve of the heart down into its middle. Dagny said the first crew did that, bored on the long transit out, and nobody had painted over it in ninety years. I traced the spiral with one glove and felt the faint ridge of the cut.
I should have sealed it. Instead I followed the coil down, counting turns the way my grandmother counted stitches, past the greenhouse racks and the dripping pumps, until the pipe ended at a small grey cabinet with a dead lamp on its door. Inside were seed packets sealed in foil, each labelled in the same hard hand as the heart. Forty-one varieties. Beans, barley, something called sweet lamplight, all with dates that had long passed.
When I climbed back to Dagny she was already holding the gun. I told her the conduit was clear and that the core could wait a season. She looked at the dust on my knees, then at the sealant she had not used, and nodded. We left the hatch open. Every morning since, I have carried one packet back to the greenhouse and planted it in the warm strip where the old pipe runs, and the spiral keeps turning inward toward whatever the first crew meant to come back for.
