Black and grey · Flash

A single black line drawing of a Celtic knot formed into a heart shape, with three looped lobes that interlace around a central point. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain has found its way under the awning again, and the cord you bought from the rope stall on Tuesday is darkening at the ends where the drips run off the canvas. Around you the market is packing up in the grey light of half past four. Vans idle on the cobbles. A man in a sodden anorak shouts that the fish is going cheap, and nobody believes him.

Old Tobias, who has sold lengths of hemp and tarred twine from the same trestle since before the bus station was built, watched you fumble the cord on Tuesday and took it from you without a word. He threaded it through his fingers the way a bookbinder folds a page. "Never lift the line," he said. "Go over, go under, and keep going until you come back to where you started. Lift it and you've only made a mess." You thought he was talking about rope.

Now you sit on the upturned crate with the cord across your knees and try to remember the pattern. Two loops first, then a third that bends over them like a hand cupping a cup. The centre is where it gets difficult. Each time you pull tight, the strands bunch and the shape slumps, and you have to start again from the bottom loop. The rain keeps falling. Somewhere behind you a radio plays a song about the sea.

At last the strands lock. You see it: three lobes curving up and in, pinched to a point at the bottom, every crossing alternating over and under so the eye slides round and round without finding an end. You turn it in the grey light and cannot find where it began. Tobias is gone, his trestle folded and wheeled away into the wet. You hold the knot up to the drizzle, and a single bead of rain collects in the top lobe and sits there, trembling, without spilling.
