Heart and infinity symbol design
Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of a heart whose lower curves merge with an infinity symbol, with loose trailing tails at the bottom and left. The linework is bold and calligraphic, with soft grey shading along the thicker strokes to give depth. The design is centred on a plain white background with no skin or body part shown.

Ines had been grinding oak soot for eleven days when the hab's loop bell rang for the third time that shift, and she still had not finished the ink for Mother Okonedo's letter. The old woman wanted the stroke right before the recyclers came round to strip the galley for the outer ring, and Ines knew why. Nobody on Caddow Spindle had ink that held once the seal was broken. Everything here was meant to last a life or two and then go back into the walls.

She worked the brush the way her uncle had taught her, pressing on the downstroke and lifting before the tail could thin. The heart came first, two curves meeting at a point above the lamp. Then the figure of eight ran through it, looping out past the edge of the page and back again, so that a thumb laid on one lobe would always feel the other. Okonedo had asked for the tails to trail off as if the line had somewhere else to be.
When the ink dried grey along the thicker strokes, the old woman held the sheet to the porthole and squinted. "You've made it heavier on the left," she said. "Good. Someone has to carry the weight on the left, or the whole thing drifts." She folded the paper into a pocket over her heart and did not say who the other lobe was for, and Ines did not ask, because the answer was already drying on the page.
